Welcome to Corvallis
We have experienced nearly three weeks here in Corvallis, OR and have been loving every minute of it. Corvallis has an excellent downtown and it is beautiful in so many ways. I thought I would share a few of our experiences with you and introduce the town to those unfamiliar with it. :)
Pedestrian Friendly
The town is completely walkable and bicycle friendly. There are covered bike spots situated throughout the downtown along with numerous U racks along the sidewalks. Second, the people are friendly. Pedestrians and cyclists are respected equally to those driving on the road. Everyone says hello as you pass by them on the sidewalk and conversations are usually initiated with ease.
Farmers Market
This is an event that is held every Wednesday and every Sunday. Each market day holds its own unique charm. On Wednesday you are likely to find a handful of local farmers with bright, colorful fruits and vegetables along with a handful of local businesses selling products that fit the atmosphere.
It brings a smile to your face as you pass by each stand and meet the people that help the local community thrive. Saturday brings much more to the table. Every few food stands you will hear the lovely sounds of live music and singing from a wide range of musicians. We came across GUMBO, a local Americana group that totally held a crowd and brought a smile to each face that passed. Other sessions included a pair of eighth graders playing on voilins, trying to raise money for their class, a lomesome cowboy beautifully strumming away on the Dobro, and a local community wind orchestra.
With all of the local farmers in the area, the community seems to work hard to support the local harvest. The local First Alternative Food Co-Op seems to be a well-rounded and strongly supported community owned business. They have great community programs and classes offering opportunities for kids and adults alike.
One place I still need to check out is the Sustainability Coalition, which is extremely involved in the community and holds many events that create positive change in the area and in the people. They also have many resources at hand if you have any questions or need assistance. They have been extremely welcoming and friendly.
Corvallis is a beautiful place. There is no doubt that the recession has hit the town hard though. Many local businesses have had to close and it seems a lot of the downtown relies on the school season and the students nine months of the year. There seems to be a shortage of If you are looking for space for a new business, you should check out the open spaces. Even though there are over five bicycle shops downtown and a handful of coffee shops, there seems to be a shortage of nightlife and cultural art galleries and shops. There are many venues the town still needs to liven up the nightlife and the artistically social events. Some of the businesses seem to be working hard on creating a nightlife along the river, so hopefully it extends out to the rest of the town. Maybe one is right for you? Check out the current Available Downtown Space . You can also check out the current business directory HERE.
If you are from Corvallis and have any good advice or recommendations, please let me know with a comment! Thank you!

Jessica:
Thanks for plugging our markets!
You might want to check out the Whiteside Theatre Foundation website. This is a nonprofit that managed to acquire the theatre at 4th and Madison from Regal last year and is working to rehab it so it can add to the cultural life of our city in a variety of ways. Don’t expect much entertainment there soon, because a lot has to occur before they can have many people in the building. But it could be a major cultural hub someday.
great pics jess. sending love your way :)
